I am looking for ancestors of Manuel Rodrigues Alemão, from Capelo, Faial,
around 1660. His descendents then lived in Castelo Branco, Faial, and their
surname evolved to Pereira Chaves. They came to the portuguese continent
around 1750, to settle in Alentejo, where my paternal family comes from
Kristie, in later records there is a baptismal date and a birth (naceu)
date. When you get to the older records it's just a baptismal date.

Kristie,
No, a birth date is the day the baby was born. The baptism date is the day
the baby was baptized into the Catholic Church. Some babies are born and
baptized the same day. Most are baptized days to a couple of weeks after
they are born.
The 3rd and 2nd time periods give both birth and

Wow, thanks for the start. I am feeling quite overwhelmed. I have been
doing genealogy for a long time and have not gotten that far on the
Portuguese side of the family, which is my maternal grandmother's entire
side. So, in general, the baptismal date is like to be the birth date?
There is what you might call a neighborhood in Lajes on Pico called
Almagreira. It is not a separate parish. A couple of other neighborhoods
in Lajes are Rua Nova and Rua do Meio. At least sometimes these
neighborhoods show up on birth records. Perhaps someone else knows the
Portuguese
The only parish named Almagreira (as far as I am aware) is on Santa Maria
island and not Pico.
Your ancestors seem to be from Pico. Although no parish called Almagreira
exists on Pico, there is a place in the parish of Lajes do Pico called
Almagreira. You can see Almagreira listed here

This is the infomration I have and I am extremely thankful for your help.

Kristie,
Do you have an approximate year for any of these people? I did find a
Manuel born in 1891 who could be a match for you grandmother's father since
his parents names match what you provided.
Kristie S,
Rosemarie and I take 30-40 researchers to Salt Lake City periodically for a
4 day conference & research trip. Our next one will be in 13 months, so
June of NEXT year. It's a lot of fun researching your ancestors with
others. The library seems to tolerate our noise level pretty well :)
Darn!

Kristie,
The CCA is the government site that house all of the actual documents:
Baptisms, Marriages, Deaths of all of the Azore Islands. It has been down
all weekend but hopefully, it will be back up soon! When you use the site
for Pico and Faial (CITCEM) you still must verify what you see with
Thank you! Which site will need to be back up?

It is difficult to know which island interests you.
There is an Almagreira (Lajes do Pico), but it is not on Santa Maria
island. It is a locality on the north side of Lajes do Pico on the island
of Pico. Being part of the Lajes do Pico freguesia, the parish should be
Santissima Trinidade.
"the newest one is Almagreira, and there are a few online books already,
before those years, one must go to Assunção, in other words, Vila do Porto.
And those are the only Parishes online for now." That quote is from a past
posting. Almagreira is on St Maria Island, not Pico. You can look it up
Cheri,
Sorry to bother you, but I am searching the site and my records have some
of my family in Almagreira (Lajes de Pico) on the island of Santa Maria,
which I don't see on the site. Any ideas?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Kristie S,
To begin researching in the Azores, you need to know who is from which
island and which freguesia (fregh (rhymes with Greg) - Z -ah - village)
that they are from. Everything in Europe is organized on the town/village
level.
For the islands of Pico and Faial, there are finding aids.
