Yes, you start with yourself and work backwards.
Go to your local public library and browse their genealogy section and
check out a couple of how to books. I like "Unpuzzling Your Past" by
Emily Anne Croom, but there may be others that you prefer.

You need to know the freguesia/village your people came from. There are 70
freguesias on Sao Miguel. You also need at minimum the year your ancestor
was born. The records are either at the archives (over 100 years old) or
at the Civil Registry (under 100 years old) and there are 6 Civil

Yes you need the Civil Registry if the event occurred within the last 100
years or so. You would have to tell the Civil Registry which freguesia to
look in.

Some of Ria's ancestors came from Nordeste and if memory serves me
correctly some of your relatives came from Nordeste? She has found one new
listmember cousin, you may very well be another although not with the Mello
surname thus far.
