There's a Maria born and died in 1892, a Manuel born and died in 1889, a
Maria born in 1887, and a Manuel born in 1884 and died in 1887. Joao and
Francisca married in 1882, so there could be one more baby (or not) between
1882 & 1884. There could be babies before marriage too (I don't think I
So far, I've only found 2 - Maria (1890) and Virginia (1893).
So I'll take that Joao as being the wrong one. I haven't been able to find
out anything about Virginia other than what is on the baptism record.

Funchal is Madeira island. Your people are from Ribeira Quente on Sao

are a different archipelago.
I have no idea what Shirley is talking about. What do you have for the kids
of Joao Ignacio de Lima and Francisca

Yes, and yes, it was. Some times up to 4 and 5 Marias
If you look at the 17 year old Maria, record # 52 year 1890, on the top
right page, 6th line down, it reads"secunda de nome", second of the
name. This confirms she is the 2nd Maria of this family thus far.
Elaine, You mentioned Maria's
So they had two daughters named Maria? Was that common?
If I'm reading this right, she was born on the April 2nd, 1887.
Thank you for finding this other record, it was making my scratch my head!
Thanks to Cheri as well for posting my Maria's record.

Thanks, Cheri.
Based on this record, I think the passports record information is wrong and
this is Elaine's family. And to prove this, here's the 20 year old Maria's
birth record in R. Quente:
Elaine's Maria Lima, #52, bottom left:

Maria de Lima, Maria do Carmo Luisa and Joao Inacio de Lima are brothers.
