OK, do I misunderstand the conversation? I've not had time to follow it
properly this weekend.
But I wonder what privacy of genealogical data or its public nature has to do
with it.
Do I correctly undersatnd that Dropbox is a place you can put your gedcom's or

I save my gedcom to dropbox and run family tree maker from dropbox... It syncs
between all of my computers and I don't have to worry about updating info when
I go from computer to computer...and it is sniff site backup as well... Could
not ask for anything else...

FYI, if you invite others to drop box and they join ( not sure how
many), you get upgraded for free. Not sure of the details, but check it
out. We use this at work all the time.

Kathy, This explanation has been very helpful to me. Thank you for being so

Thanks, it was very clear for me the way you described it. I have wanted to

Hi Cheri,
Not to drop a monkey wrench into your promo, but, doesn't most
security software provide automatic backup? I know that PAF is
continually prompting me to backup my files. If one prefers an outside
source, it isn't that expensive or that difficult to periodically
backup your software and
Dan,
It won't do me any good for my automatic backup (which goes to my hard
drive) if that fails. It won't do me any good either if I back up to a
CD/DVD or a flash/thumb/USB drive if there's an earthquake here in CA or the
neighbor above me has a flood and everything is damaged down here. Or

Well, Sam, anything is possible I guess. I'm not sure how those facilities
get hacked but encryption is always better to have than not. Remember that
first they have to get past the encryption. Then they would need to have a
program to open your file. Personally,I don't
Another repost for Kathy Cardoza:
Maria No, DB won't let you access Legacy from your iPhone. Your legacy
file may be stored in there but you still have to have an app on your iPhone
that will open a Legacy file. What you CAN open from your DB on your iPhone
are things like documents, census
Yeah, you're right about all that. Guess it's just this whole identity theft
thing that has be a bit concerned. Seems if one was so inclined, genealogy
files would be the way to go. I guess I've just been more willing to put
myself at risk, i.e. online banking, credit card to waiter, etc., than I
Sam,
Poke around in Dick Eastman's archives. He wrote about identity theft.

Sam The private information for others you are so concerned about is
going to be mostly public information, anyway. Unless, of course, you are
including people's Social Security numbers in your files, which I would

Repost for Kathy Cardoza (who is not directly online today):
Maria,
You still can,but just not in the way you thought. In the AppStore, search
for genealogy programs. There is a new one called Families that works with
Legacy that should be exactly what you need.

Kathy; Please know that I have not been nor am I now trying to create a

I haven't seen an answer to your question. I have an iPhone and use Ancestry to
go. Can also use your Safari if you want to access your online tree.

Put your genealogy backup file in Dropbox. If anything happens, you can
retrieve it from there. You can also access it from your other computer (if
you use a laptop, for example).
Cheri; I'm curious, do you feel there is any issue with putting live people
information into Dropbox? The way everything is hacked nowadays, I hesitate
to put the information on people who are still alive anywhere it might be
accessed by the bad guys out there. Sam in Maz

I don't think so. I think I remember the web site said it's encrypted. I
had Dropbox on my computer at one time, but my computer was having problems,

I have used Dropbox for quite a while now and I love it! It is safe to use as
everything is encrypted. Dropbox can be used as a backup service or (as I use
