If you are researching the USA - in the South circa Civil War, you get
tired of hearing the courthouse burned down and no records are available.
One county courthouse burned down 4 times!!
Some vets who try to obtain a copy of the DD214 have had to deal with the
records being destroyed, if me
There's a gap in the records (1884-1894) because they are missing.
American ones have missing gaps too :(

I don't know that someone else could leave under someone else's name.
Only the port of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel is online at this time. You
don't state where your ancestors were from. They could have sailed out of
Angra on Terceira or out of Horta on Faial.

Miguel are on line. I would not assume he left by other means It could be
the name is wrong or perhaps the writing was bad and you missed it. If you
found his brothers then you know the council and village h
