New install via RPM of version 2.1.2pl2 on Fedora 7.
Trying to back up /root (just the root acct. homedir as a small test) on
itself, succeeds. Trying to back up /root on another Linux host starts, but
never terminates or produces any data.

I was using the wrong version. I grabbed the one for XP and everything
works now. This is off topic but I'm also curious about your sample
"C:\unison" It looks like you are using vshadow with unison. Does
that help with unison's sync reliability? Or do you do it that way just
to make sure

I have installed BackupPC 3.0 on several FC7 computers all without to much
finagling. Lat night, I installed it on another one and had many problems. I
finally got it running and can get to the BackupPC web page. I have created a
host profile for the computer. If I tell it to start a backup, it

Unlike most people here, our BackupPC server is for catastrophic
recovery only. We aren't using it for archival purposes.
