finally I resolved most of my issues:
1) I had the global-config ("top-dir") to do backups
on /mnt/backup_disk/backuppc...
Changed now /var/lib/backuppc to point (softlink) to the external
(usb)disk, too.

maybe. it should work but Windows is a finicky beast.
you could certainly try it out.
what i do is build images of my systems to restore so i can re-image the
machine and restore the data files. i dont try to restore things in the
program files folder though. i have learned the hard way that t
most all modern versions of gzip should work fine. you shouldnt have any
problem with gzip v1+.
i just wanted to know if you were running backuppc on an old OS where your
utilities may not have the same syntax as the modern versions.

2. Restore all files on it.
3. Restore the locally saved 'system state'.
