Thanks - I read the error verbatim and realised I was being silly. The error (I can't remember the exact text and can't get to it for now) mentioned that the cpool directory and pc directory did not exist and it could not create the hard links, then it went on to certain commands to try. I was

Having played with backup pc on defaults and decided it was what I wanted to implement I decided to set it up properly on my real machine. I have a Raid 1 array with ext4 and did a new install of BackupPc. Tried to edit the config.pl to repoint the top dir from /var/lib/backuppc to
