I was inspired to do a reboot on my git bbdb repo.
git://github.com/barak/BBDB.git
I re-converted the old CVS repo, with keywords *not* expanded and uids
translated to proper names.
The branch "upstream" is the result of that process.
That is probably what you'd want to consider for savannah.

Not sure how much real names instead of uids on the commits is worth:
Dear bbdb-info list members: Barak the Debian package maintainer asks many
questions in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=617634 .
Dear Barak, I am hoping those
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.bbdb.user list members will tell you
what to do (as all this is extremely over my head.)
X-debbugs-Cc: bbdb-info@lists.sourceforge.net
Package: bbdb
Version: 2.36-2
Dear Debian, your copy of BBDB is terribly out of date.
