Learning Perl is a good foundation; I have but haven't yet read Perl
Cookbook but it is next on my agenda, to be followed by Programming

I have a copy of the Perl Black Book for a few years and it is still
fairly mint fwiw. i'd go with modern perl or beginning perl. or find
whatever interests you and pick up *cookbook (how i like to learn) and
then start looking at (scrutinizing) other peoples' code.
