I think the sound quality problems break down into two elements: i) hiss
and ii) noise artifacts that sound similar to AM radio in bad weather

Actually I think the hiss (i) may be coming from the source material
i.e. the controller is -- dare I say it -- too revealing of source
quality issues
Just tried it again tonight after changing my stream format from WAV to
FLAC (ALAC files) and all the hiss is gone. Not sure if that was the
problem but it sounds great now!

I'm streaming all flac files. Just to be certain, I just ran through it
again and mine is stone cold quiet.
I had some static, popping, etc. back in the beginning, but nothing in
the past few weeks. It sounds just like plugging in to the SBR or
BOOM.
Maybe your controller has an issue??

Running latest SC and firmware and using either Sennheiser HD650 or
Shure SE530 I'm not getting any noise. I wonder if there is something
else around interfering.
BTW, I use the SBC as a player a ton and am all over the place with it.
Even on the treadmill.
