I'm with ZanQdo here. And I know very well how a last minute default
change can screw up documentation. Large portions of my second book
were seriously borked by the change to add objects in Object mode
rather than Edit mode, which was a decision made after the first or
second test

Maybe somebody's mentioned this, but one compromise could be to add an
option at installation time to select for Heightened security (some
functionality disabled). This could be recommended for first-time users
but not set as the default.

My $0.02 is that Blender 3.0 would be most appropriate. This update of
Blender is really very much different from any of the 2.* updates, as
everybody is aware. All
