With today's welcome sunshine, the early spring migrants that had
arrived earlier in
the BOBCAYGEON area, came out in full force demonstrating once again
their abilities
to survive the adverse weather conditions which Ontario has experienced
recently.

Today's sunshine and calm was a welcome change for birding along Lake
Erie. The eastern side of Peacock Pt. had several thousand gulls loafing on
shoreline rocks and offshore. Amongst the regular species I picked out a 1st
winter Glaucous Gull, a 1st winter Iceland Gull and a 2nd sum

I had a Caspian Tern flying east just offshore from Jordan Harbour at
4:30 this afternoon. The bird didn't stop but may hang around.

Jordan Harbour can be found by exiting the QEW at junction 55 just east of
St. Catherines and head north to the lake edge.

On Sunday afternoon, April 6, there was a Northern Waterthrush at
Shoreacres Park (also called Paletta Park) in Burlington. The Winter Wrens
are still there, as well as Cedar Waxwings and Killdeer (Killdeers?).

I guess the weather last week is a subject about which the less said,
the better. However, it did make for some very interesting sightings. We are
aware, of course, that many early arriving insectivorous birds such as tree

Tundra Swans and Sandhill Cranes at Aylmer WMA
April 6, 2003
Not surprisingly given the weather and the free food, there are still 800+
Tundra Swans at Aylmer WMA. Most are families with last year's
young. Most years there are only a few dozen swans lingering this late.
Two Sandhill Cranes
Several dozen WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, many in fresh basic plumage, were very
close to shore Sunday afternoon at Spencer Smith Park, in downtown
Burlington, providing excellent views even without binoculars. With them
were LONG-TAILED DUCKS, HOODED MERGANSERS, RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS,
BUFFLEHEADS, one
This afternoon we spotted at least 15 turkeys feeding with some cattle on
the south side of road # 13 west of highway 12. They were mostly behind the
old barn and mixed with the cattle eating hay spread on the ground. This is
directly across the road from the huge gravel pit entrance.

This morning around 9:30 am at the southwest corner of Grenadier Pond I
sighted a pair of Ring-necked ducks in amongst several Hooded Mergansers,
Double-crested Cormorants and the usual denizens of the pond. There was
also a Black-crowned Night-Heron snoozing in the cattails.
