At about 8:25pm my daughter and I found a first summer Yellow-crowned Night
Heron on the east side of the Shorebird habitat. We flushed the bird from
the grass along the dyke and luckily the bird flew in front of us a landed

As of yesterday, May 10, one pair of Red-necked Grebes in Bronte Harbour has
been nesting. Prior to that the tires that had been placed for them were
unsuitable. As soon as the tires were replaced with more suitable tires
nesting began on one of them. The western tire may ride too high in the

A second-year Swainson's Hawk was observed flying over our Old Cut Field
Station early this afternoon. The bird flew west along the Point following Hwy
59. It was last seen as it headed north out over the Crown Marsh and we're not
sure if it left the Point or headed back east.

Allan Roitner and I rushed over to the John F. Smith Trail at lunchtime today
in hopes of rediscovering the Golden-winged Warbler that occurred there this
morning, but had no luck.
Consolation came in the form of several other warbler species, however:

The moment that I post a report, it's outdated. Bobolink, Purple Martin and
Baltimore Oriole were all observed within hours of my last report. Many
species of warblers have arrived this week - Nashville, Magnolia,

morning bird hike.

There was a good influx of birds overnight, add to that a few lucky fly-bys
(GREAT BLUE HERON, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON, flock of YELLOWLEGS) and it made
for a pretty good morning in Resources Road Ravine and adjacent Pine Point Park
(57 species, and I expect to add 2 or 3 more in the evening).
A male Kirtland's warbler was found singing on the South Point Trail at 9:30
this morning just past the beacon on the west side of the trail, it was
observed to be moving north east.
A yellow billed cuckoo was seen on Bennett road this morning as well.

Clear skies and calm winds were not productive for new arrivals this
morning, so overall numbers remain relatively low. Both yesterday and
today the Tip area was relatively quiet for migrants such as warblers, but

I apologize for not posting this yesterday.
I saw a single turkey, which appeared to be a female from lack of beard,
walking in a newly plowed field along with a flock of geese. This was
just before dusk, about 7:00 p.m. This was on 15th Side Road between
5th and 6th Line Nassagaweya.

After returning from three days of birding at Point Pelee, where (aside from
some great but islolated rarities) the migration was surprisingly "behind
schedule" (i.e. it was painfully birdless at times), I was pleasantly surprised
to find a good variety of migrants in the Newmarket area of York
