Today's OFO field trip for spring waterfowl migrants east of Ottawa was
thoroughly enjoyed by the 15 participants. Highlights of the 50 species seen
were Ross's Goose (adult on Milton road), Snow Goose, American Bittern (2 west
of the Petrie Island causeway), Redhead duck (4 at Embrun lagoon),

I saw and heard, a single Pine Warbler in a line of pine trees (!) in Stratford
this morning. It was just east of the water pumping station on Romeo Street.
Other birds of note seen on the trail west to Sebbon Bridge on Perth Road 111
included Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Phoebe, Savannah Sparrow
Though migration has been slow due to the not so great wind directions all week
but there were still some new arrivals down there but the warmer weather and
hopefully better winds should change all that in the coming week.

Oshawa Second Marsh
Little Gulls returned to the marsh on the 10th. Their numbers have climbed
to 20 birds this morning. When I left at 9am there was still 17 Little Gulls
and 150+ Bonaparte' s Gull in the marsh.
Other species seen were Caspian Terns, American Bittern, Black-crowned Night

As I was enjoying the half-dozen or so Little Gulls at Oshawa's Second Marsh
this a.m., a Virginia Rail flew up briefly in the reeds right below the
viewing stand. There were plenty of other good if expected birds today, but
it seemed to me that this was early for the Rail. Is that right?

I spent a pleasant morning birding Thickson's Woods today. Yellow-
bellied Sapsuckers, Hermit Thrushes and Fox Sparrows were abundant.
Both Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets were present, the latter

During a nice sunny, warm spell on Apr.17th at 7:30pm I got a new species for
my "backyard list" - a male Snowy Owl. From the direction of Kingston's
offshore islands, it was travelling on a 22-kph SW-wind.
It was definitely migrating out, because it was flying at the highest altitude
well the paper was left unread again as a nice movement of birds travelled
through or over my Ajax yard between 7:30 and 9 this morning ...
