A quick update from the Cliff today since the flight was again very good for
early September.
Total birds tallied for the day 837 Today the bulk were Sharpies (362)
with a good count of Kestrels (178) and our first hint of the Broadwing flight
(191), An excellent flight of Osprey (
Greetings birders had a wonderful day at the Hilliardton marsh bird wetland
research and education center today. Amidst a steady stream of southern v's
of geese overhead and constant well want do we call the call of sandhills
we witnessed a good movement of songbirds be banded. Perhaps of greates

about Lake Ontario seen from Colonel Samuel Smith Park. Also seen were 2 white
rumped sandpipers.

Warblers and vireos continue to move through in good numbers both on the
islands and north of the city. As well as the warblers there was a good variety
of flycatchers on Amherst Island last Sunday. That same day 2 Yellow Warblers
and 1500 Tree Swallows on Wolfe Island were noteworthy. Palm war

fly over my yard in north Bowmanville, at 5:00 PM Sept 10.

While looking for all the other gulls mentioned this week, I found a
Laughing Gull
on the main beach at Port Stanley at 10 am this morning. It was a
definitive basic, with some streaking on the head, fairly large black
beak with a little coloring at the end, but no white showing on the
prima
I returned to Andrew Haydon Park this morning and spent several hours trying to
relocate the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER I reported yesterday afternoon, with no
luck. With the strong northernly winds today, it has likely moved on.
However, there were shorebirds to be found, with SANDERLINGS (9),
Thursday's NW winds and cloud-cover spelled 519 migrating raptors over
8 hours. Many of the birds flew in low. Then Friday--the N wind was
great, but the clear blue sky made it difficult to spot the very
high-flying hawks-- we had to concentrate to identify, managing to ID
191 over the first 4 hour

At 9:00am this morning I spotted a migrating adult Bald Eagle from my
east-facing office window at 20 Bay St. (confirmed it with binoculars and drew
confused stares from my colleagues). A nice way to start the Friday as well as
fall migration.
