Hi Ontbirders,
We had an extremely rewarding morning birding areas east of Ottawa.
It started with a single Nelson's Sparrow at the south end of the causeway of
Petrie Island.
At the Giroux ponds we had 3 Ross's Geese (one juvenile and two adults) with a
flock of 150 Snow Geese (all white
Between 9:30 and 10 am this morning I observed the 2 Hudsonian Godwits moving
around the north end of Frenchman's Bay. Other shorebirds included Lesser
Yellowlegs, Pectoral Sandpiper, Killdeer and Spotted Sandpiper. There were
several peeps which probably included the previous reported
The juvenile purple Gallinule reported previously was seen again today at Port
Weller East (St. Catherines).
There are two ponds on this peninsula. One open water pond, and a smaller pond
full of dead reeds. The PUGA was seen in the larger pond (with open water) at
the south end around

I saw the Purple Gallinule between 2:00 and 3:00 this Tuesday afternoon. A
birder leaving before I got there was not so lucky. The Gallinule was
usually partly to mostly obscured by phragmites along the south end of the
pond. I was about ready to leave when it finally came out for decent

On October 10th, between 5.15pm and sunset I counted 600 Sandhill Cranes
both in flight and on fields west of Minesing Swamp.
Strongville Road south of highway 26 approximately 4 kilometres from Edenvale
aerodrome.

Had large numbers of passerines and other small birds including Hermit
Thrush, 5 Brown Creepers, many Yellow Rumped and other warblers and (ID of
which is not my strong suit) A flock of 15 Rusty Blackbirds were also
kicking around the willows of my pond. A flock of approximately 35 Brant
passed
