The days leading up to this weekend’s Monarchs and Migrants festival at
Presqu’ile Provincial Park, which includes bird banding demonstrations (weather
permitting), have been the most exciting in years for the local birding
community as a result of the discovery of a mega-rarity on August 28. H
Hi Ontbirders:
I had observed the Buff-Breasted Sandpiper earlier in the afternoon. It was
still there late today, at the same location as yesterday on the shoals off
Scrivens. It was with about 18 Semi-Palmated Plovers and a few Semi-Palmated
Sandpipers. Thanks.

Thick-billed kingbird now at tip of penninsula at parking lot on water near
calf pasture. Walk pebble beach on North side of penn. For 150 yds. Bird in
tree tops over water and out of wind. Look for pewee activity. 6:30 pm Thursday.

Saturday September 1st. I know all the excitement right now is about
Ontario's first ever recorded sighting of the Thick-Billed Kingbird, I hope
the bird is present tomorrow!

This afternoon the BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER first reported by Richard Waters
near Britannia Beach was present between 2-3pm. I first located it in a wet
grassy area to the west of the rocky shoal foraging with SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS;
later it flew closer to the pier at Britannia Beach and move
The Hudsonian Godwit located yesterday is still present this afternoon.
There were 5 Red Knots and 1 Buff-breasted Sandpiper present.
The Long-billed Dowitcher(any dowitcher) and the Wilson's Phalarope could not
be relocated today.
Shorebird present included:

Today Thursday Morning at 8:45 there were 2 Red-necked Phalaropes and at
least 3 Pectoral Sandpipers at Shirleys Bay in the west end of Ottawa. The
population of peeps and ducks is steadily increasing.

I just came back from Presqu'ile and was told by Ron Pittaway that the
Kingbird has not been seen since about 1030 (unless it has returned in
the last 20 minutes). It may still be somewhere nearby so it is worth
searching nearby areas and if anyone relocates it please post the new
