The Kingston area was not left out of the Hurricane Sandy birding
bonanza, though we didn't experience the same kind of rarity fall out
as the folks at the western end of Lake Ontario. You can find details
below. Finch numbers continued to be good with EVENING GROSBEAK, PINE
SISKIN and AMERICAN
Ontbirders,
There were 4 Cave Swallows in Port Burwell harbour early this morning, with one
Tree Swallow. The Cave's looked near death early on, landing on the pier and
flopping about weakly. By mid-morning they seemed to have perked up and were
actively working the channel opposite the pier.
On an afternoon walk, I was surprised and delighted to encounter a small flock,
all female, of five Pine Grosbeaks feeding at close range along Lingham Lake
Rd. near Cooper, north of Madoc. As an American recently moved up here, this was
my first time seeing this species in North America,
30 or so Common Redpolls in the courtyard of the Radisson Hotel all day today,
here in downtown Sudbury. Nice bonus for a visitor in town for a hockey
tournament.
