Hello Ontbirders:
Yesterday afternoon cross-country skiing along the east side of the Rideau
River in downtown Ottawa, I encountered a Northern Shrike about 50 feet up on
the top of a bare tree. I was attracted by the sound of bird song which I
didn't recognize. I have probably never heard a

Hi, Everyone,
Yesterday around 5 pm at Kingston's Invista warm water pond I had the pleasure
of the red-necked grebe and a snowy owl in the same field of view. The snowy
was on the lakeside breakwater, on the ground, looking left and right to open
water on both sides, and lots of waterfowl.
Today at 4 pm i saw 2 Sandhill Cranes land in a field south of the corner of
Sprucewood Ave / Maplewood Drive
In West Windsor, near the closed Windsor Raceway.
they joined a flock of 66 Canada geese

As several other recent Ontbirds posts and eBird sightings indicate, it seems
that early spring migration has started after a very long and cold winter.
While lake-watching this morning, I counted 23 Horned Grebes and 8 Red-necked
Grebes at Col. Sam Smith Park in Etobicoke. According to eBird,
OFO is offering an all-day workshop at Presqu'ile Provincial Park on
Saturday, March 29 focused around migration of waterfowl and other

With the formation of water on top of the ice of Staines Pond, the geese which
come in in late afternoon and spend the night on the pond are landing on the
ice itself and spreading out. This enabled me to easily spot two CACKLING GEESE
on the ice, markedly smaller than the surrounding CANADA
Photographed a 2-3 Juv. Bald Eagle and an adult Mute Swan at the Ontario hydro
Gen. Plant west of Bath Ont. today. Many dead ducks along the ice for the Gulls
and eagle to feed on. Also observed were Common R.B. Mergs. MF Lesser Scaup
and 11 MF Common Goldeneye. This was approx. 1:30pm.
