On a partly cloudy, partly sunny weekend 12 birders explored the Bruce
Peninsula from Hepworth to the northern part of the Peninsula over the 2
days.Leaders: Cindy Cartwright (Saturday), Kiah Jasper (Sunday), Alfred Raab
(both days)We visited the following areas: Saturday: Sable Beach, Sable
32 Brewer's Blackbirds, 300m south of Pike Bay Rd along Hwy 6.Each year at
this time a large flock feeds along the highway and they stay until mid to late
August.Best time to see them is between 7:30 and 8:00pm when they all sit on
the hydro wires.
Directions: This location is 22 km north of
the intersection of the
Lindsay Rd 5 and Bury Rd, about 200m south along Bury Rd. This location is
about 3 km from the first Dickcissel.
Directions: From Wiarton go north on Hwy 6 for about 28km to Ferndale, then
continue for another 8km on Hwy 6.

. There is a good chance they stay for the next 2 weeks. They typically
can be seen along Hwy 6 between Ferndale and south of Pike Bay Rd.
Ferndale is about 30 km north of Wiarton.
Caution: Hwy 6 is a very busy road!!

A smaller group of 7 birders enjoyed a beautiful hot summer day in the Bruce
Peninsula. The first day we started in Hepworth, birded Sauble Beach, nearby
woodlot and the fields, Malcolm Bluff, Cape Crocker, Isaac and Sky Lake.On the
second day we started at the top of the peninsula, birded
4 Willets at the shorebird habitat at 3:30pm

Hooded singing in Malcolm Bluff
and many of us were able to see it high up in the trees, Vesper Sparrow,
Grasshopper Sparrow, lots of Bobolinks, Meadowlarks and a few Brewer's
Blackbirds. A thanks to all participants, it was a very enjoyable day. Your

I am watching an adult Mississippi Kite hunting over a marsh in Lindsay Tract,
which is about 8 km North of Ferndale on the west side of Hwy 6. The marsh is
500m North of the parking, just follow the road going right from the parking.

on the mudflat north about 100m, the bird was seen feeding in the low grassy
vegetation at the small creek.

This morning on my walk 7 White-winged Crossbills flew in and landed close on a
spruce tree. A bit of feeding and preening and off they went flying south.
Location: Northern Bruce Peninsula, Little Pike Bay area.

This afternoon at Isaac Lake there was a flock of 30 Bohemian Waxwings. On the
Lake was a female Black Scoter, a Coot and a Pied-billed Grebe.
Directions: From Wiarton go north 8km to Isaac Lake Road. The Waxwings were
about 200m before the end of the road.

Today, Oct 23, 2009 at 2pm there were 230 Sandhill Cranes feeding on a cut corn
field. They were visible from Hwy 6, 2km NW of Shallow Lake (Shallow Lake is
between Wiarton and Owen Sound).

20 OFO members and guests meet on Saturday morning in Hepworth for the start of
a two day birding field trip covering the Bruce Peninsula.
The leaders for both days were Cindy Cartwright and Alfred Raab.
On Saturday our first stop was at Sable Beach looking for the Piping Plover
April 30, 2009 at 7:30 am.
A Snowy Owl was sitting on a fence post in the Ferndale Flats.
Directions: From Wiarton go north on Hwy 6 to Little Pike Bay Road (4km south
of Ferndale)
The Owl was about 1km west of Hwy 6 and south of Little Pike Bay Road.

below the house and the Thrush feeds always below the feeder.

left (south) on The Burry Rd (there is no road sign). Go about 500m to the
drainage ditch. The geese were seen on the east side of the road on the north

west on Little Pike Bay Road for about 500m. The owl was on the south side on a
fence post.
