pillar in the water,
diving frequently at times and resting occasionally. At one point, the bird
swam toward the lookout with a small group of scaups. The bird was present as
of 12 noon.

This morning, I found a male Eurasian Widgeon on the Laurel Creek reservoir,
along with 2 male and 1 female American Widgeons, many Ring-necked Ducks, Ruddy
Ducks, a male Canvasback, Pied-billed Gebes, and a Horned Grebe.
The reservoir is now at or very near the upper operating level. All

The painted bunting was present at 33 Arkendo Drive, Sunday, December 21. The
bird was initially seen on the edge of the cedar hedge along the rear lot line,
and spent approx. 5-10 minutes at the feeder before flying off.

Today between 5:30 and 7:20 pm, the following were present in the flooded field
to the south of West Dumfries Road:
Tundra Swan - estimated 250; possibly more
Snow Goose - 4 adults counted; no Ross' Goose
Greater Scaup - 7 drakes
Ring-neck Duck - 3 drakes
Canvasback - 2 drakes

This evening, between 7 and 8 pm, I had 2, possibly 3, woodcocks in and around
the small vernal wetlands at the south end of Cambridge. A single bird flew
quietly by me twice, then began its familiar chirping and peenting display
calls, both from the ground and air.
Wind was light and out of
Late this afternoon, probably at about 3:30 pm, a single COMMON LOON descended
on Shade's Lake. The bird could be seen from the main office of the Grand River
Conservation Authority.
Other species observed recently include BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON MERGANSER, HOODED
MERGANSER, GREATER SCAUP,
At noon on December 22, the bird was still present at the same location as
described by Paul Eagles. It was not present when I arrived, and had
apparently flew off as I pulled up in my borrowed Prius. After waiting about
1/2 hour in the car, the bird finally returned and spent most of the
Creek National Wildlife
Area, a Virginia Rail was sounding the 'kik-kik' alarm.
Port Royal is located along Regional Road 42 (Lakeshore Road), approx. 2 km
west of Hwy 59 in Norfolk County.

Due to the sensitivity associated with the following information, this posting
was deliberately delayed and, I trust, will not cause any harm to the
inhabitants of Luther Marsh. Most species noted below are breeding, so if you
are planning a trip to Luther please consider OFO's birding code
On Saturday, February 16, between 1600-1630h, the
following species were foraging and resting in open
water about 200 m off the north shore of the Inner
Bay. I had good views/light from the first parking
area along Front Street, just east of Port Rowan.

Today, January 24, at approx. 2:45 pm, I observed a
single short-eared owl for several minutes in
agricultural fields southeast of the intersection of
Chalmers Forrest Road and Schummer Line, southwest of
the Town of Linwood. The bird was flying very low
