The Prince Edward Point Christmas Bird Count began with a snowstorm that really
cut down on visibility. At times, participants had no choice but to mark down
“Duck spp.” and “Gull spp”. for birds half-seen through heavy snow. Then the
weather cleared and the teams were surprised at the number
There was a pair of Golden Eagles over the Thousand Islands this afternoon. One
was just south of the US border checkpoint at Ivy Lea Bridge and the other was
just north of the Canadian checkpoint.
Directions: From the 401 or Thousand Islands Parkway, take the route marked
“Bridge to USA”.
The first shorebirds arrived at Kaiser Crossroad today: small numbers of Lesser
Yellowlegs and Semi-palmated Plovers.
DIRECTIONS: From Picton, take Loyalist Parkway, AKA Hwy. 33 towards the Glenora
ferry. Just before the ferry (There will be a sign.) turn right on Lake on the
Mountain Road.
The Snow Geese seen yesterday along Kaiser Crossroad were not seen today.

The wetlands along Kaiser Crossroad in Prince Edward County are just starting
to open up and today there were about 50 Snow Geese, all white-phase birds.
Directions: From Picton, go east on Highway 33 toward the Glenora ferry. Just
before the ferry (There will be a sign.) turn right on County
A pair of Helmeted Guineafowl was seen along Glenora Road in Prince Edward
County. While they are certainly not native, this is the second time I have
seen them – the first was a few years ago. Clearly, these exotic game birds are
making themselves at home in the area.

Two Trumpeter Swans were surprise late arrivals at Kaiser Crossroad this
morning.
DIRECTIONS: From Picton, take Bridge Street AKA Glenora Road toward the Glenora
ferry. Turn right on Lake on the Mountain Road/County Road 7, then right on
Kaiser Crossroad. The swans were on the first wetland on
Two Trumpeter Swans joined 6 Tundra Swans at Kaiser Crossroad this afternoon,
providing a rare opportunity to see the big birds in eastern Prince Edward
County.

The season’s first Greater Yellowlegs appeared at Kaiser Crossroad in Prince

That elusive Eurasian Widgeon re-appeared this afternoon at the very back of
the north wetland along Kaiser Crossroad – it seems to like to be at the back,
whichever wetland it’s frequenting.
DIRECTIONS: From Picton, take Bridge Street AKA Highway 33 east to Lake on the
Mountain Road/County
Last weekend, Jeff Haffner got a brief glimpse of a duck he was almost certain
was a Eurasian Wigeon. Today the bird re-appeared and in full sun, it could be
identified positively as a Eurasian Wigeon. It is at the south wetland on
Kaiser Crossroad, where you may also see the flock of 30+
The 350 Snow Geese which were present in Prince Edward County yesterday were
not evident today.
DIRECTIONS: From Picton, take Union Road/County Road 8 to Kaiser Crossroad,
then walk down the track opposite Kaiser Crossroad to Lake Ontario. The Snow
Geese had been on the left.
This afternoon, 350 Snow Geese fluttered down onto the Lake Ontario ice near
Kaiser Crossroad, Prince Edward County.
DIRECTIONS: Take Union Street/County Road 8 out of Picton and follow it to
Kaiser Crossroad. Then walk down to Lake Ontario on the track opposite Kaiser
Crossroad. The geese
An early pair of Hooded Mergansers showed up early, and in an unusual spot,
Cressy, in Prince Edward County. A White-winged Scoter, common in the County
but rare at this location, was also spotted nearby.

The Rusty Blackbirds were not seen (on two visits) today along County Road 10
near Ridge Road.

A Barrow’s Goldeneye was present on Lake Ontario, north of Prince Edward Point
in Prince Edward County. It was seen with a group of Greater Scaup, Long-tailed
Ducks, White-winged Scoters and Red-breasted Mergansers.
DIRECTIONS: From Black River, follow County Road 13 south. When the fire
The Great Gray Owl was not present along Highway 33 east of Wellington (Prince
Edward County) this morning.

The Great Gray Owl is still in the Wellington area (Prince Edward County) and
was perched on a phone wire at Highway 33 and Conley Road this afternoon.
DIRECTIONS: From Wellington, drive east on Highway 33. The owl was just before
Conley Road on the north side of the road.
The Prince Edward Point CBC was held in “challenging” conditions on December
14th. Wind chill was in the –20s, a lot of open water had frozen over the
previous night and there was fog over the remaining open water.

afternoon, nor along the accessible areas of the Moira River between the 401
and the Bay of Quinte.

A single black tern showed up in a flock of about 100 Bonaparte’s gulls on the
south wetland at Kaiser Crossroad this morning.

Even more Bonaparte’s gulls flocked to Kaiser Crossroad this afternoon, about
1,000 in all. Hidden in the noisy flock were 3 little gulls and the year’s
first dunlin at Kaiser.

Yesterday, 3 early lesser yellowlegs joined the greater yellowlegs on the south
wetland of Kaiser Crossroad. Bonaparte’s gull numbers were down by 500 to about
300, still a very impressive sight.

sandpipers and semi-palmated plovers which were present earlier in the week
were no longer there today.

of Kaiser Crossroad this week: 4 semi-palmated plover and 5 pectoral sandpipers.

A Barrow’s goldeneye was hanging out with many common goldeneyes today towards
Cressy. The bird was a couple of kilometers west of Kaiser Crossroad on Lake
Ontario. Patience is required -- there were also thousands of redheads and
greater scaup in the same area.

A pair of ring-necked ducks is still hanging out at near the lighthouse at
Presqu’ile Provincial Park.
Directions: Follow the signs from the 401 to the park, then follow park signs
to the lighthouse. The birds are due east from the viewing blind near the base
of the lighthouse.
A pair of American wigeon was the reward for birding in outrageously windy
conditions today at Wellington harbour.
Directions: take highway 33 east from the center of Wellington and turn right
at the LCBO. The dock is straight ahead. The wigeon are hiding among the Canada

Presqu’ile Provincial Park this afternoon.
Directions: From the 401, take the Brighton exit and follow the signs to
Presqu’ile, then follow park signs to the lighthouse/interpretive centre. Walk

A great blue heron and two American coots were surprise sightings at Wellington
Harbour in Prince Edward County this afternoon. An added bonus: 10 tundra swans.
