Took a quick run down to the source of the Niagara River in Buffalo (US)
this afternoon. The highlight was a juv. NORTHERN GANNET which I picked up
about mid-river from Squaw Island just south of the Int. Railroad Bridge close
to
the seawall where the Sabine's Gull was frequenting a few we
At around 2:10 p.m. this afternoon while watching Lake Ontario from the
large parking lot within Fort Niagara State Park in the US, I had brief (about
20
sec), distant (>500 yards) in-flight views of a cormorant which appeared to
be an adult non-breeding GREAT CORMORANT. I picked the bird u
Bill Watson and I started the day watching the cooperative SABINE'S GULL
from 8:30 to about 10 at Squaw Island, Buffalo just south of the railroad
bridge
amongst several others including interested locals. Also here were 5 WW
Scoters, 3 Am. Tree Sparrows, 2 flyover AMERICAN PIPITS, Horned
Peter Yoerg just called to report that he is watching the juv. SABINE'S GULL
at Squaw Island. The bird is about a tenth of a mile south of the
International Railroad Bridge right along the Squaw Island shoreline on the US
side.
The easiest way to reach the location is the cross the NORTH Sq
sy to miss at that time with the
distance and lighting. Also around were at least 1 juv. Common Tern and 4-6
Great
Egrets on the Fort Erie shore.

Bill Watson and I spent the afternoon in the Niagara region in search of the
above species, unfortunately coming up empty, although it turned out to be a
nice day otherwise. A fair number of Killdeer, plus 3 juv. Greater
Yellowlegs were present at Jaeger rocks between about 2-3 p.m., while

between at least 8:30 - 10:30 am at Jaeger Rocks in Fort Erie, loosely
assoicating with a juv. Dunlin. Also as Willie D. noted, the bird is very

Just got a call (3:20 p.m.) from Shane Blodgett of Brooklyn, NY who is up in
Niagara. He and family were on the Maid-of-the-Mist boat about half an hour
ago and he had a bird fly-by heading upstream towards the Horseshoe Falls
which he was pretty certain was an ADULT SABINE'S GULL. For thos
