i did however have to (?) install an app to view the jpg file. Actually i
Blackbox works in xinerama. It's not very xinerama-aware, however it works just
as well as most other windowmanagers in xinerama mode.
I'd recommend using xinerama instead of the setup you're currently trying to
use...

Sure thing. Use 'xv -root -quit blah.jpg' or 'Esetroot blah.jpg' Blackbox
doesn't care. Check your style conf file, though, it may set its own
background.
