The problem was apparently the way that fontconfig was installed. I
re-installed it as root, not a package-user, and both Thunderbird and
Firefox ran without a hitch. In fact, I'm in my new, shiny BLFS build now.
I would, however, like to continue the discussion about tracking
installed files
