ensure also you have got this file:
$XDG_CONFIG_DIRS/menus/applications.menu
(something like /etc/gnome/xdg/menus...)
It is installed by the package gnome-menus.

and create a file called mimeinfo.cache in that dir.
So, what is the content of $XDG_DATA_DIRS?
