I'm pretty sure that grub will only allow you to boot from drives that
are recognized by the BIOS on you machine.

I'm just begging to work with BLFS. Are the dependencies listed for a
package compile time or run time? I've been assuming that they are
compile time but just want to be sure. If my assumption is true, I
assume that in order to take advantage of the optional dependencies the
