the audio is always reported as MPEG Audio layer 3 by Kaffeine.

ctive mode because you are making the assumption that the error
occurs before SYSVINIT package gets control.
DJL's suggestions seem an admirable way of debugging this.
You could also try looking at the last modification dates of all the
startup scripts and work in reverse chronological order to try and
identify the failing script.
