I am using Jaws 9, and FWIW, couldn't even find things like standard menu
systems etc. since if I try various combinations of Alt (alone), Alt + space

Will try these out.
Have previously ripped other simpler DVDs using DVD audio extractor, but
this is literally the very first one I've found this side including a
narrated soundtrack, and that sort of complexity seems to be causing the
problem somehow whereas the other ones I ripped to my PC we

Hi, you may want to try another DVD to make sure the one you have is not bad
or damaged. Since it is stopping in the middle of the disk, it sounds
damaged or dirty. Take warm water and hand soap to wash the disk. Dry well
and try again.
What DVD is it?
That being said here are a few options.
Ok.
Along the lines of my previous hassles, I just tried:
vlc-0.8.6f-win32.exe
It's completely inaccessible, and I could nowhere find anything more than
previous track, next track etc. etc., as well as options for selecting
various subtitle languages, but nothing to do with narration languages,
Ok.
Now tried running Any DVD, and definitely made sure that all chapters were
selected, and that the correct audio tracks were selected as well, and it
still only extracted 4 of 33 tracks, and with no narration, so who knows.
Stay well
