My Acer Aspire 5735 laptop came with a Realtek HD Audio sound card. I'm
currently using the native HD drivers shipped with Windows 7, which is

No, but I am sure he did not say you cannot get updates anymore.
The reason you have to switch to IE when going to the update site is that it
searches your pc to see what if any new updates are needed and also runs the
authentication process to verify you run a legit copy of windows.
I never use IE

I hardly ever use skype, I am a windows live person, like it better. Only
for the odd headset calls to a friend who for some reason cannot get her
headset to be set up good with windows live, do I keep skype on my
computers. Besides that I am a lousy language teacher lol

Who told you that? Windows update has nothing to do with whatever browser
you are using. The only thing there is is that you need to use IE to browse
the windows site manually. All you need to do then is just start IE from
