No, but I am sure he did not say you cannot get updates anymore. The reason you have to switch to IE when going to the update site is that it searches your pc to see what if any new updates are needed and also runs the authentication process to verify you run a legit copy of windows. Who told you that? Windows update has nothing to do with whatever browser you are using. The only thing there is is that you need to use IE to browse the windows site manually.
