Have you tried going through the system's tray for AVG?
I think the hot key for update is, Alt U or it could be Alt I
Are you using version 8?
If so, if you go to your desktop and enter on AVG
n you
enter on it and then you tab across to make changes until you get to an
apply or an ok button.
