Follow-up Comment #2, bug #28256 (project grub): Thanks root (hdx,y) kernel /boot/grub/core.img boots to the grub2 menu and that boots Ubuntu 9.10 OK. I re-installed Ubuntu to a re-formatted sda14 (ext3 this time) and told the installer to put the boot loader in sda14. Chainloading with :- root
