no there is an lba option to give grub.
from grub-install manpage:
--force-lbaforce GRUB to use LBA mode even for a buggy BIOS
from grub info docs:
*Caution2:* A number of BIOSes don't return a correct LBA support
bitmap even if they do have the support. So GRUB provides a
solution to

There is alot more google content regarding this error than the GRUB
GRUB GRUB error. Unfortunately alot of the talk about this error is
way over my head. But there is one message on google groups that has

people look at my menu.lst and grub.conf and fstab
and fdisk etc.etc. and i think we are in agreement that that stuff is ok
now. but still all I get is GRUB GRUB GRUB GRUB
I am compiling with emerge, it downloads source and compiles it from an
.ebuild script, best as i understand it. I have tried
grub-install but I can only assume that emerge the
gentoo package tool IS.

another piece of info, this may shed some light on the situation:
I just installed LILO, and set it up and boot it.
This is what I get now, when i boot:

it starts with

make sure you are installing into the boot sector and not one of the
partitions.
how did you install?
what device did you use?
