The reason for tying lyrics to DevNull is for tying lyrics to the soprano melody in a piano reduction. Say you have soprano and alto. In almost all hymns, soprano carries the melody. But alto may be doing a different melody. And in hymnals, the two lines are printed in piano reduction form as
