Thank you Fabounet I see what you mean.
By un-referencing the subdock and setting it to null at line 149 in the
file applet-init.c the expected behaviour is achieved.

But what did you try to do exactly?
Can you also check if compiz-plugins is installed by launching this
command from a terminal?
$ sudo apt-get install compiz-plugins -y

Yes, you can do that from the General Option / Desktop size.
Note that you can also use the Unity Tweak Tool.

ok, thanks for the details :-)
in any case, for the users that have the problem, a workaround is to
install "ccsm" and enable a switcher plug-in (and maybe also enable
workspaces somewhere or set the number of desired workspaces).

the dock only uses gio (which then may call gvfsd through Dbus)
what if you make gvfs-open unexecutable (sudo chmod -x /usr/bin/gvfs-open) ?

forces the applet to load an empty icons list, which is probably

It *should* be installed but it's not easy to "force" its installation.
We recommend it only if XFCE, LXDE, KDE, etc. is not installed:
Package: cairo-dock-core

cairo-dock-plug-ins,
@Matttbe: what if the Compiz's DBus plugin is not installed ?
Our script should still be able to activate a switcher plugin in Compiz (to
have alt+tab and workspaces), no ?

I downgraded gtk3 from 3.14.4-1 to 3.12.2-1. The issue is still there
and as started above it only happens when KDE Integration is disabled.
