I could clone the uboot system from the observatory to campus and try to
set up tftp etc. -- that is pretty much what I intended to do

I could as well install the Matlab 2018a + Vivado 2018.2 on Debian after
installing Service pack update 6 for Matlab R2018a. The original path
issue was at line 380 of ~R2018a/bin/matlab script where "newdir"
variable wasn't getting initialized correctly. After correcting it, it
worked!

Do you have any existing, functioning ROACH2 boards? Are they booting from
an SD card or from network? If it's a network card then it's a simple
matter to copy the one to the other, if from network then the most you may
need to do is update your dnsmasq.conf to assign an IP address to
4 matches
