For National Wildlife Refuge Week the dike at Tschache Pool was open for a walk
which Bob Guthrie and I led Sunday 10/18/09. We walked out just to the turn
and this got us close enough that everyone in the group got a good look at the
Eurasian Wigeon. When we returned a Bald Eagle was perched
A bright female RUSTY BLACKBIRD was just visible in the 10 square feet that
is the view from my cubicle at the Lab, on the north side of the
building. A few rusties have been seen on the trails over the last week or
two.

i stopped by Stewart Park this morning (Mon 19 Oct): ZERO Pied-billed Grebes
from the shoreline out to the shimmer & mist. The Snowsotrm last Thursday
night seemed to cause a wave of migrants to stop here with the unprecedented
100+ Pied-billed Grebes initially hunting close to shore and later
John Confer's story of his dog catching a Yellow Rail was amazing. His
description of the bird was detailed, but just the circumstances alone
probably would have convinced me of the identification. A bird caught by a
dog running along in a hayfield. That's just a perfect Yellow Rail
story.
Diversity continues despite lower numbers/activity at the Freese Road community
gardens. I stopped by between 1115 and 1230 today and it seemed very quiet
compared to yesterday much earlier in the morning when there were so many birds
flying back and forth between the gardens and the wood edge

John went down to the bank about 1:45 this afternoon then stopped by the Rte.
90, Mill Pond, duck/owl box (on the Howland St. side). He squeeked & instantly
a gorgeous, fluffy head appeared at the hole!! He brought me the car so I
could go look at "our" little cu

I stopped in at Stewart Park around 12:30 this afternoon while doing
errands. The lake was perfectly calm. To add to Dave's list from this
morning I found a single Ruddy Duck and a single Pied-billed Grebe, both
off the west side of the park, as well as a total of 7 Wood Ducks in the
lagoon.

2 Adult and 1 juvenille SANDHILL CRANES were seen on the Southwest
Burm of the North Marsh (Merganser Marsh) at the Montezuma Audubon
Center at 4:30pm today. They began "bugling" after a BALD EAGLE flew
over.
