I came across that loon too today, Glen, and watched it make a few frustrated
efforts to get going in that short waterway. I found out from John Confer that
it's been around since yesterday, and that he and others are coordinating with
the DEC to try to assist the bird out of there at some poin
My sister-in-law lives on Flat Iron Road across from the Goetchius Preserve.
She noticed that a Common Loon must have gotten sucked through a culvert from
the large pond on the other side of the road and is now stuck in a small stream
with only around 100 ft running upsteam in which to take off
A quick run through Montezuma brought fewer ducks than last couple weeks but
did see 15 Caspian Terns and about a dozen Pectoral Sandpipers,
all in the new shorebird pool (before curve). East Road, Van Dyne Spoor &

Cool, I heard one too on my way to the bus this morning (at 7:40 if it matters
as a "basin first"). Also year firsts for me were Fox Sparrow and White Crowned
Sparrows both vocalizing in the same area. Add in Cardinal, Phoebe, Junco, and
Purple Finch, and the air was *full* of beautiful song!

Not much on Dryden Lake or George Road this morning (though I heard word
there were a bunch of gulls, probably Bonaparte's, on Dryden Lake before I
got there.) I also flushed a VESPER SPARROW off the road on Chaffee Road at
Dryden Lake.

There was a nice red Fox Sparrow in the feeder garden at the Lab yesterday
afternoon as well as Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher on the Wilson Trail.
