A few minutes ago, as we were having lunch, two gorgeous male Pileated Woodpeckers flew down just outside our window, one low on the box-elder the other low on a black locust nearby. I think they were sizing up each other, in an annual Spring ritual in our yard. In my bird archives I see that

The Montezuma wildlife drive is open up to the spillway. The water is all frozen. There were gulls sitting on the ice as well as two juvenile Bald Eagles. Other Bald Eagles were sitting on the far side of the river silhouetted by the sun. I also spotted a Harrier checking out the marsh.
