Well, yes, it look like is working but in the background for HQ router native vlan is 101 so, untagged traffic is send over vlan 101, on the far switch the untagged traffic is been put on the native vlan (untagged) of the local switch, in this case 1. That is why everything can work even with this

This seems like a dumb question... If the hq rtr has a subinterface with "native" in it don't we have to have to have a native statement on the switch port with the trunk to hq?  for example.. hq interface fa 0/0.101 encapsulation dot1q 101 native ip address 10.10.100.1 255.255.255.0  and the
