Be happy it was the capacitor. Guy replaced mine for 100 bucks or
whatever.the alternative is thousands of bucks on a new compressor.

Make sure there is a filter dryer installed in the system.
Nothing kills an AC unit quicker than interior corrosion caused by
water mixing with the freon.

I just replaced mine last year
- Make sure you've got it turned off
- The problem could be in the capacitor, which would be much cheaper. Some
AC's have two capacitors: a run time and a start up capacitor. Basically
they just provide a boost. If the start capacitor is bad, the unit wont
start
It depends on what is wrong. The most expensive part is the compressor
I believe. Some people say depending on the age of the unit if your
compressor goes it may be better buying a new unit.
Other parts are cheaper. it could be an electrical short that you can
get rewired etc.

Heh. Silly me. I found the receipt for the unit and it was 6K, not 10. Still
a lot of money, but in North Texas you need that AC.

When I lived in Texas I had a heat pump that went out after about 17 years.
I replaced it with a separate AC/furnace and it set me back 10K including
installation, but I got a 10 year warranty on it. I believe it was a Lennox.
