Sounds like a CMOS battery problem but she's just told me that the Mac

According to my Apple certified pBook/iBook technician in the next
room, no CMOS or PRAM battery on an iBook.Ah, okay... clears that up.
Does this happen every time, or just when shut down without being
plugged in?
She says it only happens when the machine crashes. She did not specify
if
