Burning is the reaction between an oxidizing agent and a reducing agent.
Usually we call the reducing agent the fuel and we neglect the oxidizing agent.

solid fuel they probably pollute.
Also the contrails created by the shuttle do have effects on the ozone layer.

The solid rocket boosters produce a nasty cloud. However, I think
you're right about the main engines. Someone else probably knows better
than I do, though.
