I finally got to watch this.
This guy is definitely playing for real. There are a few spots where he
gets off the tape and you can hear his guitar not perfectly matching the
'record' he is playing too.
There are a ton of videos on the net like this; i think I spent half a
day on google

As a [not that good] guitarist myself I can tell you that his use of
artificial harmonics and tapping in all the right places means that to fake
it he would have to be good enough to play it anyway.
