Ya, just for giggles I looked up its range and it's about what you
would expect from the name. It's a pretty tree though...just not,
apparently, the one you have.

Sorry all, I was in a LONG ass meeting. I like the effort that everyone
has put forth so far, though!
So, here are the answers to the questions while i was gone:
Dana, yes, I am in New England, so I doubt anything that has 'desert' in
the name would last more than five minutes around here! :)
Is this close?

Once it does produce leaves, you can take one to a local nurseery or
contact your local Cooperative Extension office.

We've got a little weeping cherry in our yard. What a whacky tree.
When it's not trimmed it looks like Cousin It has set down roots.
Ray, when you take pictures be sure to get a leaf close up.

Oh yea, another question:
How did they get those little pine type trees to spiral like that? Is it
grown that way, or do you have to trim it that way?

Cool! Thanks! I will still bring in pictures just to make sure. My next
questions might involve how to maintain. I am (obviously) new to the whole
greenthumb thing.

Definitely flowering. Weeping Cherry, probably Japanese or Oriental. I would
guess dark pink flowers (since some thought went into the plantings, and it is
against the white house with red shutters). And it wouldn't clash with the
other tree.
That red tree in the middle of the yard looks like a
Yea, I won't. It just looks butt-ugly with no leaves, and I am a man, so I
got the urge to destroy it. :)
Hopefully, it is a flowering tree, that would look great out there

The first one looks kinda close...
UPDATE! I forgot that I have an ofoto account, I have a picture of the
house when we did the inspection, and the leaves are on it.
So, until I take a picture tonight (without leaves, you can get a better
idea of what it looks like without the leaves, believe
Although, someone might have trimmed the canopy back, explaining the oversized
trunk for the canopy size.
Do either of these feel similar?

Don't chop it down ... It's definitely ornamental.
Prune it way back though, now, before spring, let it grow out over the
summer.

We have a few ornamental tress here that I have to go and prune back
this month.
I haven't figured out what they all are yet ei
Perhaps a Japanese Cherry Tree?

Well, I am thinking cherry that has been shaped.
Did you mean 6-8" diameter and 8 feet tall, or 6-8" circumference?
If you meant 6-8" diameter, with a 5' canopy, I'd even bet on something grafted
onto the trunk.
Are there no branches sticking up at the top of the trunk, but everything

Looks like a willow of some sort from that sketch ...

I didn't find it in there, I don't think.

Definitely ornamental. It is planted right up close to the house, and I
have never seen this type of tree (growing wildly) in the New England area
before that I know of.
Let's see, to answer your questions:
I raked all the leaves when I moved in, and don't remember what they looked
like. I w
Are there any leaves left on the tree or laying around?
How big is it? (height, trunk diameter, canopy width)
How tall is the bare trunk before branches start?
Do the branches alternate sides of the tree, or are they opposite from each
other?
What color is the bark? How smooth is the bark?
