It's a logarithmic scale. 7.0 is ten times more powerful than 6.0
which is 10 times more powerful than a 5.0, etc..

there is an earthquake plugin for Google Earth that shows you the USGS feed.
The quake was centered next to a farm near Mineral, VA. (a few miles north
of Royal Virginia Golf Club, if anyone knows that course). I am familiar
with that area, it's pretty countryside farmland.

Read it was also because the ground is more 'solid' - not broken up
by faults - so it 'conducts' the vibration better.
