Beth,
To throw another brand in the mix, Hewlett Packard.
Since going to England in December, I've been using my little HP Pavilion
N5190, 700mhz, 256MB RAM, 9gig, partitioned HD, 14.1 display, floppy drive,
DVD, NIC, modem, 2 PCMCIA slots, as my primary workhorse, until my DELL
tower gets
i would go with an IBM
do not get a Dell
i have gone threw 4 mother boards 2 LCD's this year alone.
if it wasn't for our service contract i would be hosed.

what brands/models can you recommend?

I agree 100%. I also have a Dell Inspiron 7500 for my personal laptop and
I haven't had a moment's trouble. It beats the pants off the IBM Thinkpad
provided by work, stupid thing crashes if I open 3-4 applications at once.
I highly recommend Dell. Stay away from IBM.

what you are looking for.

Dell. There is no other. Never a second's trouble. Support site
kicks. My Inspiron 7500 is almost two years old now, and it still does
everything (except play the occasional 3D game - that's what the desktop
machine's for) I want it to.
Of course, that won't stop me trying to convince work
I have a dell laptop, I love it. Everybody I know who has a dell laptop
loves it.
I will always recommend Dell to people. But that is just me.
