There were several outages reported in internet weather yesterday --
tho I don't spend enough time at the site to know if it was an usual
number. Its just as possible that microsoft was having some sort of
internal re-shuffle of its reference material. They do that quite a
bit too.

so far 4 computers in our house won't connect (to microsoft).maybe it's an
ISP problem?

it could be an isp problem if the computers all have the same internet
access. See if you can download spybot. Or say the plugin for
housecall.antivirus.com. Scott is correct in saying that conficker wont let
you do that sort of stuff.
Alternative diagnosis -- see if a traceroute tells you
ok here's the traceroute (and its not working on a Mac we have either, however
support.microsoft.com is ok):
Hop (ms)(ms)(ms)IP Address Host name
1 12 7 7 72.249.134.177 -
2 13 6 7 8.9.232.73
if anyone can explain this, please do as I'm no expert!

interesting. You would think if it's dying *at* microsoft more people would
be affected. When was your most recent windows patch?

well, you've inspired me to do my own tracert. Mine is dying too but way
back on the sprint backbone so I dont think it's an identical problem. A
couple of questions -- where are you located? Are you pinging
www.microfoct.com or what exactly?
Of course it is also possible that conficker is
er... microsoft.com? You'd think any self-respecting trojan would block the
support page if it was going to go there tho...

I'm pinging microsoft.com using

Maybe this is bigger than we thought and its targeting the network?

as I said before its affecting every pc in the house including a mac, the
latest pc is only 2 months old and is definitely fully patched - i'm sure this
is a network attack..

interesting. You
try this. Download WireShark (it's free). If you can't run it you're
definitely infected.
If you can, it will provide information.
You started trying to ping because you can't get the site? By the way, if
your computers are networked, it's irrelevant that *one* of them is
definitely patched.
in this case i refer to the web the traceroute seems to indicate a failure at

can you get the page tho? Because when I use command line I get something
that looks like a

and yeah, the ping dies somewhere around atlanta. Which would seem to be the
wrong direction, but there you are. Let's remember that this site is ping

nothing too important, just wanted to access some info on FAT versus nfts file
systems.
I'll phone my isp tomorrow if I still can't reach the site.
the link I was trying:
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/russel_october01.mspx
interesting that the google cache has expired and that
maybe you're reaching one of microsofts (thousands of) cache servers?
Working fine from here.
