Sorry for the blocked link. The problem could be either that the visible URL
didn't match the link URL (thought I checked that but ...), or that the short
URL is immediately redirected by the service (using a 302 temporary redirect)

As you can tell, I'm still getting to grips with CF. Thanks for the explanation
and revised example. I can apply the same principle to specifying the depth of
our soil temperature measurements, so that's another question answered.

I think the CF convention document urgently needs updating to acknowledge the
existence of NetCDF4 features and take a stance on the interpretation of CF
within a NetCDF4 file. I see this as a first step before we consider whether
to use NetCDF4 features explicitly in the CF model. A
Jonathan Gregory wrote on the issue of "downward"
and "upward" as separate standard names vs indicated by an attribute:
